Stylo by Gorillaz i find to be a very interesting and much more pleasurable video to watch compared to usual music videos due to the fact that they tell stories. With most of the videos from Gorillaz they create very unique stories following the animated band members, which when watch i find to get much involved in the song. With alot of music videos they contain two variation of clips including the band playing the song live, along with a set of shots that can relate to the lyrics. With this video being a short film almost it still cuts shots along with the change of beats and verses which keeps the flow well, along with fast past and speed up shots to keep the intensity of the story going. Another thing i found to be interesting was the change of scenery and style of the film changing as Bobby Womacks' verse plays, creating a much darker and surreal feeling. The pace of the song also corresponds with the film, for example as the song starts the building crescendo to another verse, the editing and camera shots build up as well with shaky cam shots and quick cuts. The environmental sounds coming from the cars and gun shots also create a sense of intensity as they fit with the beat and fit well with the genre of the music. Another unique feature about the Gorillaz's videos is that they end the story as if they can be then continued with another video with another song as they do, which helps them bring the audience back.
Vampire Weekend // Oxford Comma
Another music video i find to be very interesting is the successful single from Vampire Weekend called Oxford Comma. The song itself is brilliant and along with the cleverly put together music video directed by Richard Ayoade, who i have recently done some work on his other films. The video is shot across a countryside house and the best part about it is its use of only one shot throughout the whole video. The narrative of the video is quite circular as it comes back to him driving off in a car, the same as he enters in with the same style. What i also love about the video is how it is broken up with chapters, although not a lot changes when it does, it brings in more variety into the video and changes with the verses of the song for more depth and correlation with the song. Another interesting factor is the way in which even without cuts the video still has to parts to it, with the story follow the man, and the band play at different parts.
